Tamil Nadu's electricity demand is expected to grow by 6%, reaching 22,150 MW this year, says Minister V Senthil Balaji in Assembly.

Tamil Nadu is set to witness a significant rise in its electricity demand this year, with projections estimating the peak requirement to touch 22,150 MW—marking a 6% increase from last year’s all-time high of 20,830 MW recorded on May 2, 2024. This was revealed by Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji during the Assembly session on Tuesday through a policy note presented for his department.

He added that the state also recorded its highest daily energy consumption of 454.32 million units (MU) on April 30, 2024. The city of Chennai alone reached a peak power demand of 4,769 MW and daily consumption of 101.755 MU on May 31, 2024.

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s efficiency in electricity distribution, the minister claimed that the state delivers 99.97% uninterrupted power supply—setting a benchmark unmatched by any other Indian state. His remark came in response to a complaint by AIADMK MLA Senthil Kumar, who claimed there were frequent power cuts.

“If there are complaints in any specific region, we are ready to investigate and resolve them. We are taking all steps to ensure stable power delivery,” said Balaji. He further noted that to bolster the distribution system, the state has already replaced 74,000 aging transformers to prevent disruptions.

The Tamil Nadu government continues to invest heavily in power infrastructure to support growing urbanisation, industrialisation, and household energy needs. The 6% anticipated rise in electricity demand underlines both the state’s development trajectory and the pressure on its energy infrastructure.

Minister Balaji reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that every household and industry continues to receive reliable and efficient electricity without compromise.
